Training vs. Behavior Modification

Training

  • Uses operant conditioning to affect learning through conscious, deliberate actions.

  • The dog learns to intentionally perform behaviors when cued or prompted.

  • Uses rewards like food, toys, affection, etc.

  • Appropriate for good manners ("obedience") training like Sit, Leave It, Come, etc.

  • Conducted by one of our experienced, certified trainers.

Behavior Modification

  • Uses classical conditioning to affect associations with triggers.

  • Identifies and addresses what's causing the dog's behavior.

  • Modifies inappropriate behavioral reactions to environmental factors.

  • Primarily relies on body language, food, and increasing/decreasing distance from triggers.

  • Necessary for dogs with anxiety, reactivity, aggression, fearfulness, etc.

  • May include training cues that are useful for managing undesirable behavior.

  • Conducted by our certified behavior consultant.
